The Gate at a Glance

Not the famous one.
That's the point.

Junona sits on the southern side of Tadoba's Moharli buffer, roughly an hour's drive from Chandrapur and about three and a half hours from Nagpur. It shares terrain and tiger movement with the Moharli core — the same forest, the same waterholes, the same cats — but it's a buffer gate. Which means: fewer gypsies at sunrise, less pressure on the guides, and permits you can actually get within a normal booking window.

Most first-time visitors arrive fixated on Moharli or Kolara. That's what every travel article writes about. The truth from operating here: on any given safari, whether you're at Moharli core or Junona buffer, the odds of a good sighting come down to the same handful of factors — season, waterhole activity, guide skill, and a little bit of forest luck. Junona gives you all four, minus the three-month advance booking scramble.

Why Choose Junona

What makes this gate
work.

1. Resident tiger territory

The Moharli buffer holds resident tigresses that raise cubs here, which is the single strongest signal for consistent sightings. A tigress with cubs stays close to reliable water and prey — which means her movement is predictable, and predictable movement is what safaris are built on.

2. Realistic booking window

Moharli core gate permits often disappear 60–90 days out, especially for weekends and the March–May peak. Junona typically opens up 2–4 weeks in advance for the same dates — the same forest, without the calendar anxiety. If you're planning a trip in the next month, this is the difference between a confirmed safari and a scramble.

3. Photography-friendly light

Junona's terrain — open teak with grassy clearings and seasonal waterholes — gives long light lines in the early morning and late evening. Fewer vehicles per drive also means the guide can hold position longer when a sighting develops, which is what makes the difference between a phone snap and a portfolio frame.

4. Buffer economy that reaches locals

Buffer gate permits fund forest-department work directly, and buffer safaris employ local guides and gypsy drivers who live in the villages ringing the reserve. Booking here isn't just easier — it puts the safari fee closer to the community that protects the forest.

When to Go

Best months at Junona.

Sighting probability is a function of heat and water. As Chandrapur dries out, tigers concentrate at fewer waterholes, and the buffer's smaller water sources make sightings around them more reliable than in the rain-fed core.

Planning Your Safari

How the day runs.

Morning safari. Pickup from your Chandrapur or Moharli-area stay 45 minutes before gate opening. Junona gate opens with sunrise — around 6:00 AM in winter, closer to 5:30 in summer. The drive lasts approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, returning by 9:30–10:00 AM to a full hot breakfast at your stay.

Evening safari. Pickup around 2:30 PM for a 3:00 PM gate entry. You'll drive until closing — approximately 6:00 PM in winter, 6:30 in summer. Dinner is served at your stay after return.

What to bring. Layered clothing (cold mornings, hot afternoons — even in summer, gypsy wind chills a pre-sunrise start). Full-length sleeves and trousers in muted colours. A wide-brim hat, sunscreen, binoculars, camera with your longest lens, and plenty of water. Junona guides carry basic first aid; your stay will pack a light breakfast box on request for morning drives.

Stay options. Premium stay + safari packages start from ₹6,000 per person per night, breakfast and dinner included, single safari bundled. Options range from forest-edge cottages to boutique buffer resorts. Full package pricing on request over WhatsApp.

Is Junona gate good for tiger sightings?
Yes. Junona sits within the Moharli buffer cluster, where several resident tigresses hold territory and cubs regularly. Buffer gates generally have very competitive sighting rates and Junona's terrain — mixed teak forest with waterholes — brings tigers within range on most safaris during the peak dry season.
What are the safari timings at Junona gate?

Junona vs Moharli core — which should I book?
Junona is a buffer gate; Moharli refers to the adjacent core zone. Both draw from a related tiger population, but Junona has easier permit availability and is typically less crowded. For most travellers — especially those booking within 4-6 weeks of travel — Junona is the smarter default. For seasoned wildlifers with fixed dates months ahead, a mixed Junona-plus-core plan works well.
