Somnath is the least-marketed of Tadoba's nine Chandrapur-side buffer gates. It sits at the northern edge of the Pangadi-Zari zone, near the Somnath temple settlement, and covers a section of buffer that acts as a wildlife corridor between the Pangadi range and the eastern edge of the reserve. Movement here is quieter — but when it happens, it happens along predictable lines.
The gate is about 55 km from Chandrapur and roughly 170 km from Nagpur. It works best as a second or third safari in a longer Tadoba trip, paired with Pangadi Aswal Chuha or Zari Peth. For a single-safari visitor with limited time, a Moharli-cluster gate is usually the better call — Somnath is where multi-day wildlifers extend the map.
Buffer stretch between two tiger territory blocks — quieter than the flashier gates, but predictable in movement lines once you know the section.
For a 3-4 safari itinerary, Somnath adds terrain and range diversity that pure Moharli or pure Pangadi bookings won't give.
Photographers who've already covered Pangadi and Junona often find their most original frames here — simply because nobody else works this gate as hard.
Even in November and February shoulders, Somnath delivers enough movement to justify the drive. Not a peak-only gate.

Sighting probability is a function of heat and water. As Chandrapur dries out, tigers concentrate at fewer waterholes, and the buffer's smaller water sources make sightings around them more reliable than in the rain-fed core.

Morning safari. Pickup from your Chandrapur or Moharli-area stay 45 minutes before gate opening. Somnath gate opens with sunrise — around 6:00 AM in winter, closer to 5:30 in summer. The drive lasts approximately 3 to 3.5 hours, returning by 9:30–10:00 AM to a full hot breakfast at your stay.
Evening safari. Pickup around 2:30 PM for a 3:00 PM gate entry. You'll drive until closing — approximately 6:00 PM in winter, 6:30 in summer. Dinner is served at your stay after return.
What to bring. Layered clothing (cold mornings, hot afternoons — even in summer, gypsy wind chills a pre-sunrise start). Full-length sleeves and trousers in muted colours. A wide-brim hat, sunscreen, binoculars, camera with your longest lens, and plenty of water. Somnath guides carry basic first aid; your stay will pack a light breakfast box on request for morning drives.
